About Wall Go

Wall Go is a free, browser-based two-player abstract strategy board game. Drawing inspiration from territory control games like Go and blocking games like Chess, Wall Go challenges players to outthink their opponent using a combination of piece movement and wall placement.

The goal is straightforward: control more squares on the grid than your opponent when the game ends. But the path there is subtle — every wall you place to block your opponent is also a wall your opponent can use to block you. The game rewards players who think several moves ahead and balance offense with defense.

Wall Go is designed for local two-player play on a single device. No internet connection is required after loading, and no data is collected. Simply open the page and start playing.

Game Rules

Wall Go is played on a grid between two players. Here's how the game works:

Setup: Each player has a set of tokens and a set of walls. Player 1 controls blue tokens; Player 2 controls red tokens.

Placement Phase: Players alternate placing their tokens on the board squares before the main game begins.

Game Phase: On each turn, a player may either move one of their tokens to an adjacent empty square OR place a wall between two adjacent squares.

Walls: Walls block movement permanently for the rest of the game. A wall placed on the edge between two squares prevents any token from crossing that edge in either direction.

Scoring: Each square occupied by your token counts toward your score. The player with the most squares at the end wins.

Game Over: The game ends when no player can make any legal moves. The final scores are compared and the winner is declared.

Control the Center Early: The center of the board offers the most movement options. Occupying central squares early gives you flexibility throughout the game.

Use Walls Defensively: A well-placed wall can pen your opponent's tokens into a corner, limiting their scoring potential for the rest of the game.

Don't Over-Wall: Every wall you place is a wall your opponent didn't need to waste a turn placing. Use walls purposefully, not defensively out of panic.

Watch Your Walls Count: Each player has a limited number of walls. Managing your wall supply is critical — running out early leaves you with only movement options.

Think Two Turns Ahead: Before placing a wall, consider how your opponent will respond on their next turn. A wall that traps them might also trap you.
